Volunteering in Cusco
[SEPT 2nd - 15th, 2010]
I've decided I would like to volunteer overseas. This was a long time goal of mines ever since I've started volunteering locally at home. I wanted my trip to be unforgettable and decided to go for it. Thanks to a recommendation from a friend of mine from Norway she gave me information about this organization called IVHQ. After registering the rest was history and now here in writing.
My friend and I spent a week volunteering at a community center where kids come to do homework and play. It is about 20-25 minutes local bus ride from downtown Cusco by the markets up to the mountains. Day and night it is cold to which i'm surprised the kids are never cold.
Our hours typically start from 2pm until 5:30pm or so. Speaking to the kids was of challenge as I don't speak Spanish fluently. I spoke to them in my broken Spanish but somehow and miraculously they understood for the most part what I was trying to say. We had the regular professors who comes in to help out as well. One of which is a teenager who goes to the local english classes to learn english. She and I had an exchange of conversations where we also talked about music en espanol, such as Julieta Venegas, Mana, Juanes, and etc.
To have only a week is honestly too short. Despite that the experience was truly an experience of a lifetime and something I will look forward in doing again.
